Vicious Vikings came to Year 5!
Hi everyone,
Yesterday Year 5 had surprise visitors from the Jorvik Viking Centre in York. We became familiar with the Viking life style and how they survived, including; hunting, how they made their houses and the materials used, their favourite food and drink, different musical instruments they used and ways they entertained themselves, for example attaching cow bones to their shoes to skate on the ice.
We learnt that the word 'saga' is a type of story which was told using lots of description and metaphors to bring it alive. Isaac, Max, Gracie, Jess and Grace were chosen to dress up and act out a saga told by one of the leaders. The story was about the Viking God, Thor and his hammer which was stolen. The children were amazing actors/actresses and really got into character!
After lunch we talked about different weapons and what they were used for. Some children were chosen to hold some of the weapons and different things were passed around throughout the session. We were taught a lot about battle tactics and were given shields and swords to create our own shield walls.
At the end of the day we looked at a variety of different medicines and ways to treat the ill and injured.
It was a fantastic day from beginning to end and we are looking forward to using what we have learnt during our lessons in the coming weeks.
Please enjoy our photos!
Mrs Bailey and all of Year 5 :)
